The Beginning

2000

Martín G. González became a U.S. Citizen in 2000 — fifteen years after his arrival to this great country, as he says — and started the business that same year. He has always been so sure about what he would like to do, and how to do it.

La Milpa offers fresh products & good quality Traditional Mexican Food.

The restaurant’s purpose is to make people happy. Martín figured that the best way to do it would be by introducing his love for Mexico to all customers. So, events about art and culture are also one of our strengths.

In 2001, the first event for celebrating one of the most important ancient Aztec traditions — The Day of the Dead or “Día de Los Muertos” — took place. La Milpa has planned this kind of event, so RVA’s community and all visitors can become more aware of Mexico’s beauty. This tradition has. continued at La Milpa every year since.

A New Light

2013

Mónica Chávez came to RVA five years after the 2008 Global Financial Crisis began.

One day she met Martín at the restaurant’s market and made friends with him. Suddenly, both of them realized that they understood each other so well about La Milpa’s purpose, importance about preserving Mexican traditions, sharing knowledge about gastronomy, supporting art, and promoting culture, that they then decided to become partners and run the business together.

Now, La Milpa owns six lunch vans, offers caterings, attends to massive public events like Richmond Folk Festival, organizes parties at the restaurant to celebrate Mexican holidays — like “Cinco de Mayo” —, support immigrant issues through a non-profit organization — “Amigos Legacy”—, and started the development of a source of produce called “Colibrí”, which is located less than a mile from the restaurant.
